Ukemi

Ukemi can be translated as ‘to receive through the body’. If you are uke, you are the person attacking and then being thrown or pinned. Ukemi thus involves learning to take throws and pins without being injured. One of our oldest fears as humans is the fear of falling. By first overcoming this innate fear, then develop confidence in your ability to protect yourself during class, you open yourself to receive the essence of Aikido training. With this confidence comes increased strength, awareness and sensitivity.
