What Can I Expect During Aikido Class?

Classes usually begin with warm up exercises, then falling (ukemi) practice. This leads into basic partner exercises, then more strenuous techniques. Students take turns performing and receiving the techniques demonstrated by the instructor. Students change partners throughout class. By training with a variety of partners and working both as attacker and defender, the student is able to experience and study aikido as an organic whole.

Aikido is taught and learned is a different manner than most people are used to. Aikido is transmitted by observing and doing. There is little or no verbal direction or discussion. Beginners are given extra help from the instructor and senior students. Students must watch carefully to comprehend what is being taught. Paying close attention is the first step to awareness. With increased awareness, a student is able to expand their understanding of the art and how to apply its principles both inside and outside of class.
